For those of you in the Hong Kong area I highly recommend this weekend’s Hong King Philharmonic performances of the Ring Without Words, with the legendary Lorin Maazel conducting.
Absolutely gargantuan in scope, it’s 75 minutes nonstop of the best instrumental bits from Wagner’s 26+ hour titan Ring Cycle. Maazel of course knows it like the back of his hand. Coupled with the intimate Siegfried Idyll, one of the sweetest birthday presents of all time, in a reenactment of the first morning it was played on Wagner’s staircase.
Friday and Saturday at 745, this is a highly recommended performance.
