Jolivet Concertino

The Jolivet Concertino, while a short piece with a cute name, is actually quite difficult. I remember thinking to myself before this weekend’s concerts, “Why didn’t I just play the Haydn?” It turned out all right, though. Here is a performance from 2003.

Icebucket- A Little Less Conversation

Here’s the final track from the Icebucket project, our relatively symphonic version of one of my favorite Elvis tunes. Joining as a guest is trombonist Jonathan Reycraft laying down some bass notes.

The Trumpet Shall Sound

The Messiah is one of my absolute favorites and I love to play the Trumpet Shall Sound.  Here’s a performance from 2000.

Stardust

Here’s a performance of Stardust with piano at the 50th anniversary concert of my dear friends Ken and Marjie Smith in 2006. I also recorded this concert, which was made into my first album as a producer. Ken was a trumpet player and the first night Ken and Marjie met he was playing this tune at a bar. Love at first sight, as they say.

Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets

Here’s a recording of the Vivaldi Concerto with Ed Hoffman, back from 2001 when I was on a one year appointment as principal of the Baltimore Symphony.  Check out Ed’s trumpet etudes, duets, and other studies, especially his arrangement of The Rite of Spring for trumpet duet!

My Little Suede Shoes

Here’s a Sunday brunch style version of Charlie Parker’s tune My Little Suede Shoes, with Tim on guitar and Dave Sheets on the bass, way back from 2001.

Maria

Here’s a recording from 2004ish from another live radio broadcast of Maria from West Side Story, arranged by Jack Gale. Joining me are Jennifer Montone, horn, Gerry Pagano, tuba, the legendary Susan Slaughter on trumpet, and Steve Lange with a gorgeous trombone solo.

Video from Singapore

I sat in the other week with my friend Cindy “Chilani” at the “Burlesque” party at Lucky 13 in Singapore, and somebody took a bootleg video.  Here’s her version of “Why Don’t You Do Right” with me in a bow tie playing a few notes.

New Generation – Bezdeistvie

In the summer of 2008 I lived for a couple months in Sofia, Bulgaria, and we met the guys from the historic Bulgarian band New Generation at the Spirit of Burgas music festival, which is an awesome summer festival on the beach of the Black Sea.  We hung out a lot that summer, and I played a little bit for their new album.  Here is the last track on that album, titled Bezdeistvie, which ends with a little trumpet solo.

Haydn Trumpet Concerto- Second Movement

Here’s the second movement of the Haydn concerto from 2002.  Incidentally, this performance began at the exact time that Tom Brady was starting the last field goal drive to beat the Rams in the Super Bowl.  They had to drag me out of the stage crew office backstage to make me play this.   Click here for the first movement.
